DESCRIPTION
Organized by the Linguistic Society of the Philippines and SIL Philippines, in cooperation with the University of Santo Tomas, PLI 2 offers courses in comparative, descriptive, applied and sociolinguistic topics with particular emphasis on Philippine languages and language research in the Philippine setting. The goal of PLI is to provide local and international students of Philippine languages and linguistics with current 'state-of-the-art' coverage on selected topics by leading researchers in the various fields.
PLI 2 focuses on the theme "Language and the Developing World." The 1953 UNESCO monograph entitled "The Use of Vernacular Languages in Education" argued that the best way to educate children is through their mother tongues. UNESCO lamented the fact that much time and resources were wasted through educational and language projects undertaken by those without informed knowledge of what needed to be done. UNESCO found that in cases where educational and language experts took the helm of these projects, specific problems were identified faster and, in many cases, resolved (Tupas, R. & Mahboob, A. 2013). Thus, there is a need to upgrade the expertise of education and language stakeholders in the areas of linguistics and applied linguistics. PLI 2, by offering a 10-day intensive training program, hopes to address the gap between theory and practice among language professionals, researchers, teachers.
