Editorial policy: sources, numbers, corrections

This page carries the editorial policy of LSPHIL and, below it, the historical board of the Linguistic Society of the Philippines as the society’s own site left it. The two are kept apart on purpose: the policy is ours and is applied to every page we publish, while the list of officers is an archive record and describes the society, not this publication.

Editorial policy, in the order it actually gets applied.

• Sources before claims. A number, a date, a licence or a quotation appears only when it can be traced to a named source. Where a source could not be checked, the sentence says so or the claim is dropped. “A study found” without the study named is not a source, and pages are edited to remove it.
• Marking. Archive pages carry an archive note. Paid placements carry a placement note. Neither is presented as editorial judgement.
• Corrections. Errors are corrected on the page itself rather than argued about; a claim that cannot be supported is removed rather than softened.
• No invented people. LSPHIL does not publish a masthead of staff it does not have. The board list below belongs to the Linguistic Society of the Philippines and is historical: those officers served the society, not this publication.

Two consequences follow from the list above and are worth stating plainly. The first is that pages here get thinner rather than longer when a source cannot be found: a missing field is better than a filled one nobody can check. The second is that the archive is not edited for tone. Dates, fees and deadlines in the society’s old pages have long passed, and they are kept as they were written, with a note saying so, rather than quietly updated to look current.
