How to Place Online Sports Bets in Canada: A Beginner’s Guide

Why Bet on Sports Online?

Betting on sports is more than a simple way to earn money — for many, it is about the excitement, the drama, and having fun. Betting on a game immerses you more into the activity. Every pass, goal, or point suddenly has more significance when you have something invested in it.

And no, it isn't required to be wagering on your favorite team to experience the thrill. Once you place a bet, you inherently find yourself hoping your prediction is realized. It is that emotional investment, that twist of excitement, that makes betting fun!

In Canada, wagering on sports is a trending way to heighten the sports experience. Whether it’s the NHL, the NBA, or the CFL, betting brings a whole new level of excitement. And when the ticket hits, there is no feeling like it. Explore Canadian Sports Betting to understand how to get involved!

Choosing a Sport to Bet On

Canadians are very fond of their hockey, but there are plenty of other sports to bet on including basketball, football, baseball, soccer (a.k.a. football for the rest of the world), tennis, and even Formula 1.

Which sport should you select to bet on, though? The best sport to bet on is a sport you have a good understanding of. All sports have upset, dark horses, and surprises. Even the best teams lose every so often — travel fatigue, back-to-back games, or when a few players don't play.

For instance, if you are aware the Toronto Maple Leafs will be playing the third game in four nights, that could factor into your betting considerations. The more you know about the sport and its patterns, the better your bets will be.

Where to Place Bets in Canada

The sports betting market in Canada is growing quickly, especially with provinces like Ontario regulating single-event betting. There are numerous choices, whether private or on government websites.

Popular options include:

  • Bet99

  • NorthStar Bets

  • Betway

  • PointsBet

  • PROLINE+ (Ontario Lottery and Gaming)

When choosing where to bet, look at:

  • Competitive odds

  • Sports and events offered

  • Types of bets available

  • Deposit and withdrawal methods (Interac, Visa, PayPal, etc.)

  • License and legal status (especially in Ontario)

  • Live betting quality

  • Bonuses and promotions

  • Mobile app and user experience

Main Types of Bets

There are three basic types of bets:

  • Single (Straight) Bet

  • Parlay (Accumulator)

  • System Bet

Single Bet

This is the most straightforward bet: you choose one outcome in one event.

Example (NHL):

  • Toronto Maple Leafs to win — odds: 2.00

  • Tie after regular time — odds: 4.20

  • Vancouver Canucks to win — odds: 2.80

If you bet $50 on the Leafs and they win, you get $100 in return.

Parlay

A parlay is the combination of multiple individual bets into a single bet. You will need all of the bets to win for the wager to payout. The risk is greater, but, so is the reward because the odds are multiplied.

Imagine if you placed a bet on the Raptors, Canadiens, and Blue Jays all to win. If just one of the teams loses, the entire parlay loses. If all three win, you hit a home run.

System Bet

A system bet is a collection of smaller parlays. The grace of this bet type is that one or even more selections can lose while you still profit.

You've made a $90 system bet comprised of 3 combinations (mini-parlays) of $30 each. With your one loss, only the combinations that involved that selection have lost, and the other two may still come in for you.

Great for reducing risk while still going for a decent payout.

Totals and Spreads (Over/Under & Handicap Betting)

Total (Over/Under)

You're betting on the total number of points/goals in a game, regardless of who wins.

Example (NBA):

  • Over 215.5: bet wins if the total score is 216 or more.

  • Under 215.5: wins if it's 215 or less.

A bet like this is perfect if you think that a game will feature lots of points or few, but you are uncertain who ultimately will win.

Spread (Handicap)

A spread provides one team a fake head start. It assists in equalizing the odds in a game where one team is favored by a large margin.

Example:

  • Canadiens +1.5: if they lose 3–2, your bet still wins because the adjusted score is 3–3.5.

Spreads allow you to support an underdog with a little safety, or get better odds in betting when taking a favourite.

Can You Actually Make Money Betting?

In short, probably not long-run. Sports betting is too unpredictable, no matter how much you analyze it. There are professional bettors, but they are few and far between and depend on deep data, discipline, and bankroll management.

Most people bet for the fun of it. And that’s okay — as long as you’re playing responsibly.

Every now and then, someone hits it big. Like the fellow in Montreal who placed a bet of a few dollars on a Formula 1 podium bet and took home thousands. But that’s not the norm, it’s the exception.

Consider betting as entertainment—similar to attending a concert or ordering takeout. Decide on a budget and stick to it.

In Canada, platforms with a license offer responsible gambling measures: deposit limits, reminders for time, self-exclude, and more. Use them.
